The Alton Club is now into its 55th year and currently has 17 members. Meetings are held monthly, usually on the second Monday at 7.30 p.m. at the St. John Ambulance Headquarters in Anstey Lane. A variety of speakers are invited to meetings and an occasional supper is organised with profits being donated to charities.
Monthly pub lunches are enjoyed at many local hostelries with a summer outing, usually to a local garden.
The objects of Inner Wheel are to promote true friendship, to encourage the ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding. Fundraising events are organised in aid of local and overseas charities when fun and friendship prevails. Social events as well as fundraising are occasionally combined with Rotary. The Club supports the District Holiday scheme when an adult carer, or someone in need, enjoys a holiday in a Bournemouth hotel; with a young carer being invited to an activity centre every third year. The Club supports the Rotary Shoebox Scheme and collects many items such as stamps, postcards, spectacles, inkjets, ring pulls etc. which raise money for overseas charities. In addition, support is given to the local Women’s Refuge in several practical ways, including the provision of bedding and clothing and the purchase of Christmas gifts.
Membership originally came from wives of Rotarians but recent changes in the constitution now enable clubs to invite ladies who do not have the Rotary connection but who express an interest in joining a personal service organization, whilst at the same time benefiting from fun and friendship. With membership reducing, it is hoped that this rule will enable the organization to thrive and grow.
Alton Inner Wheel Club would welcome new members, and anyone interested in further information about the Club should email email@example.com, or phone the Secretary on: 01420-549829
